Riding for the disabled

Post  missbee on Mon Sep 19, 2011 3:23 am

Although we probably have missed the early intervention boat a bit (is this meant to be preschool only), and this is probably in the wrong section, just wanted to know if anyone uses the RDA.

I got an info pack from the social worker, and we are entitled for christopher to go.

I have worked for a few months as a volunteer (in the henderson one) and thought it was great, and my severly disabled brother went when i was a child (i remember getting the odd free ride)

I just wondered if any other ASD kids do this? I was considering horse riding for him anyway, as i think he would benefit from other people instructing him/new experience/bonding with animals, and he is not so much a team player, so was thinking this may be good for him....however if do feel a bit weird that he is not physically disabled, and would hate to think by us going someone else who is more disabled may miss out.

What are your thoughts on this???? I know we had a few deaf kids that used to come when i worked there, and they got so much out of it....so im a bit of the fence.

Ian did it for a few terms after he started school, but before he was full-time at school. I think it was definitely helpful for him, there were a couple of other ASD kids doing it as well.
We stopped before we had to as he no longer wanted to do it and didn't enjoy it anymore, however I think it was because he wanted to go further than they were prepared to let him (he wanted free-reign). It was great for his core strength and also his empathy to animals improved. It also helped with the volume of his speech as the horse wouldn't move till he spoke clearly and at a decent volume; we very rarely get the whispering from him now which is great!

He also goes to the gym with an OT who started a business doing gym for special needs kids here in Christchurch and that has been really good too.

we have put Mikko's name on the waitlist up here but that was at least 6 months ago and I haven't heard anything. I think Mikko will love it, my problem will be what to do with the clingy 18month old if we get to start.

How exactly do you put your name down for it? Or does it have to be through an OT only?
